The biggest movie theater chain in the world is finally opening its first-ever movie and TV club in the Philippines, and it’s hoping the move will help it attract new customers and boost its revenue.
The Movie and TV Club, or M&T, will open its doors in the heart of Manila’s entertainment district of Uppertal on May 14, 2019.
It will house more than 20 theaters, including the most famous ones, such as the Palaepa Palace Cinema in Manila, and will host the first screenings of movies, TV shows and live events.
The M&M is expected to be the Philippines’ first movie club with a direct line to theaters, a move that will help the chain attract new moviegoers and boost revenue.
“The M&C is the perfect location for us because it’s right next to the MRT station,” said Pino Varela, vice president of operations at M&Ts Cinemas, the chain’s largest theater operator.
“The MRT is also where many of our cinemas are located.
We will also be in close proximity to the entertainment district, so we can offer our patrons more choices.”
Varela said the chain will not only be open to its regular customers, but also to visitors from other parts of the world, as well as visitors from nearby malls, where M&Ms are a popular hangout.
“Our goal is to get more and more people to come to M&As and go to our movies,” VareLA said.
“We will try to offer more than 50 different movies and TV shows.”
A recent survey by the Philippines Film Industry Association showed that M&A activity in the country had surged by 40 percent over the last five years, to an estimated $18.7 billion.
The industry’s biggest theater operators, such in the area of Bicol and Mamasapano, are also pushing to attract more customers, especially the young.
“We are expecting that this move will bring in new customers who are going to come here to watch our movies because we will have a movie club, we will be able to offer movie nights,” said Bicol cinema operator Manuel Pascual, a Filipino-born filmmaker who has been working in Hollywood for almost 10 years.
“If we can get a few of our young movie lovers here, it will be an incredible thing for us.”
Mamasapanor, a smaller cinema chain, has already opened its first movie theater in Uppartal, the southern part of Manila, in January 2019.
“I am very excited for the arrival of the M&R [movie and TV] club,” said S. Srinivas, director general of Mamasanor.
“It will give the Mamasans an opportunity to come and watch movies here.
We are hoping that the new club will be a very good one.”
The Philippines has a population of about 2.3 million, of whom nearly 3.5 million are aged between 15 and 24, according to the government.
In 2017, a similar survey by Philippine Film Association revealed that Filipinos aged 25 to 34 are the most popular moviegoers in the nation.
According to the association, M&s Cinemas has also seen a 20 percent growth in viewership since 2015.
