An 18-year-old man was shot and killed by officers in a Los Angeles police department parking garage, authorities said Wednesday.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday in the parking garage of the police department’s 5th Precinct in the city’s north.
Police said the 18-month-old boy was sitting in the backseat of a vehicle parked in the garage, and officers saw him take off running with what appeared to be a weapon in his waistband.
Officers then chased him and a few minutes later, they opened fire on the vehicle, hitting the boy, according to a police statement.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation was under way, and a coroner was expected to determine whether the boy died from gunshot wounds or an accidental discharge, according with the police statement released by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
A department spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
